This weekend I visited London for a fun reason. Many Americans have memories of summer camp - but mine are a little different. 30 years ago I traveled to the USA for the 1st time at 18 years old and worked for the summer at Lake Bryn Mawr camp in Pennsylvania.
As Brit university students, we were able to do this with Camp America - we earned travel to the US, pocket money for 10 weeks, and a visa with time to travel afterward (still exists!).
The year was 1992 - pre phones or social media. I met Steve, Mark, and Drew at camp and we traveled together. 30 years ago this year! So this was our reunion.

This weekend had much drinking of beer and reminiscing about…
How Mark and I went to Toronto first just to buy a 6 pack of Labatt’s because after 10 weeks at camp at 18 years old (when US drinking age was 21), we REALLY wanted a beer!
How we after camp to all meet up at a certain day and time at the Greyhound station in Washington - and it worked!
Taking photos outside of a white building with pillars we were convinced was the White House and wondering why they let us get so close- then finding the real one around the corner!
The characters on the greyhound bus. One who swore he was a “movie producer” and wanted to cast us 😂 . In total, with a month long Greyhound pass, I did 4 corners - NY - Chicago - SF - LA - Oklahoma City - Orlando.
The time I was in the top bunk in our hostel room and they had to pull off a French dude who tried to climb up my ladder. Thank God for traveling buddies!
Wish I could find out what happened to some of the girls from camp - I remember being particularly touched by two kids in my bunk room named Dana and Stephanie.
It’s nice to live in the past sometimes, just for a little while. 😍
